What all of our patients suffering from any hyperpigmentation issue have in common is how hard they find coping with the change to their appearance. Many tell us they no longer like to look in the mirror, no longer recognising the person they see.
Dr Qian and her team at Skin Aesthetics know exactly how hard this can be for you and want to help guide you towards happier, clearer skin that you can be proud of.
You might have heard of melasma by two other names; ‘chloasma’ and ‘pregnancy mask’. Melasma and chloasma are simply words derived from the Greek words to describe the colour of melasma, black and green. The term pregnancy mask refers to how common it is for women to be affected by this type of hyperpigmentation during pregnancy where, according to the British Skin Foundation, 50% of women may be affected.
The exact cause of melasma has not been scientifically proven, but similar to other hyperpigmentation it is the result of pigment-producing cells producing too much melanin. It has been suggested that melasma is as a result of hormonal changes to the body, which is why pregnancy can lead to so many people suffering the condition. Birth control pills and hormone replacements are also thought to cause melasma.
Whatever the cause, the patients we have seen here at Skin Aesthetics are usually upset by the change to their appearance that melasma causes. Dr Qian, started her journey into aesthetics with one goal, to help everyone feel comfortable and happy in their own skin. We understand how difficult a sudden change in your appearance can be and how damaging this is to you psychologically and socially. Book a convenient time to meet with one of our Doctors to discuss options available to help your skin return to its glowing, natural best.
We treat every patient individually, taking the time to understand what has happened to your skin, what you are currently suffering with and working towards preventing it happening again in the future to ensure your skin is shining and your smile is beaming.
In your consultation we will uncover past damage, assess your current symptoms and create a plan to ensure your skin looks great in the future.
Once you have booked your initial consultation at one of Skin Aesthetics clinics most convenient to you, you will meet with your Doctor who will examine your skin and ask questions to understand your Melasma problem in a holistic way. If it can be solved at home, we will give you suggestions on creams to use and other changes that you can make yourself.
If your Melasma problem is more complicated, we will work on the right approach for you. We take you through each step of your journey that will typically be a combination of micro-needling and chemical peels alongside clinically proven skincare products that will have you feeling great in your own skin again.
Sometimes, with the right application of skin lightening creams, we are able to remove melasma in patients. We will also recommend other creams and lotions that you should use to maintain healthy, hydrated and happy skin.
Chemical peels are a great treatment to help improve melasma by removing the outermost affected skin that contains the excess pigment.
Your face will first be cleansed and then your Doctor will apply the right chemical peel for your skin type to your entire face or the area to be treated. The time the peel will remain on will be determined by your Doctor, based upon your skin type and sensitivity. You will then have a neutraliser added to allow the peel to be removed before a gentle protecting cream is applied to your face.
After treatment, your skin will be red and you will feel some tightness and perhaps some stinging, this is normal. Your skin should heal within two weeks but depending on the size of the melasma spots fresh red skin may remain for up to a few months.
Microneedling works by harnessing your body’s own natural healing ability. Immediately after an injury to skin our bodies reuse damaged collagen and elastin fibres to produce healthy new ones, repairing the damage to the skin.
Your skin will be numbed to ensure you are comfortable and don’t experience any pain in this treatment. Using a SkinPen, your Doctor will expertly create microscopic injuries in the areas affected by melasma that will stimulate new collagen generation helping to heal and remove excess pigmentation.
After the treatment your skin will be slightly red, similar to a sunburn and you may experience some skin tightening and slight sensitivity. This should completely disappear after three days and you will begin to see results within a few weeks.
