Botulinum toxin for Wrinkle-relaxing, face slimming and gummy smiles
- Are you more expressive than you would like; looking angry or annoyed when you are not?
- Do you wish your lower face was slimmer and less square?
- Do you dislike showing your top gum when you smile and wish there was something you could do?
A muscle-relaxing injection may be the answer!
What is botox and how does it work?
Botox® is actually a brand name. It was the first one on the market, so the name has stuck. There are now several different brands and all are equally effective. The active ingredient is botulinum toxin which is a naturally occurring chemical which prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscle so the muscle cannot contract. A fine needle is used to inject the chemical into specific muscles. The injected muscle can’t contract so wrinkles relax and soften. The effects will start to show after two to three days, will be set at two weeks and will last around three months on average. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medication and therefore should only be injected by a doctor, dentist or a nurse who has been trained in using it.
3-area anti-wrinkle Injections
If you’re fed up with people telling you that you have charming “laughter lines” or that your face has lots of “character” you can whip away those wrinkles in your lunch hour! The forehead, frown lines (Glabella) and smile lines (Crow’s feet) are the three areas commonly treated with botulinum toxin, and these are usually referred to as 3-area botox. If you have strong expression lines in those areas, they will gradually become permanent as the skin ages. It can help relax the muscles responsible for those expressions, and soften the winkles that have formed. Botulinum toxin has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for certain wrinkles, but one drawback is that it does not improve your skin quality at all. At Skin Aesthetics, we pride ourselves in providing a holistic service so that we can give you the best results for your money. One of our doctors will always assess your skin quality and discuss skincare and skin rejuvenation during your consultation.
Masseter Reduction: For Face Slimming and Bruxism
You may be dissatisfied about the shape of your face as tension, age, stress or your facial structures have given you a more square face than you would like. If you want a safe and quick way to slim down your lower face, botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscles may be what you are looking for. A medical reason for having this treatment is bruxism – the medical term for teeth grinding and clenching your jaw. This can wear down your teeth as well as causing earache and headaches. Most of this happens at night so it’s quite hard to stop, and it’s often linked to anxiety and stress. Taking the antidepressants SSRIs can cause bruxism, as can sleep apnoea. In these cases, botulinum toxin is an effective treatment. For bruxism, the results may be noticed within two weeks. However, for face slimming, the results will take several weeks to show. This is because the masseter muscles are big muscles and take several weeks to slim down to create a slim lower face. Often, a second treatment is needed to give the optimum results.
Do you avoid smiling in photos because you hate your gummy smile? There is a very simple solution for this. Just a small injection of botulinum toxin on each side of your nose will relax the muscles responsible for your gummy smile so that when you smile your top lip won’t go up so high and will not expose your top gum.
Botulinum toxin can also help with the following issues:
- Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Lines on the bridge of your nose (Bunny lines)
- Neck bands (Platysmal bands)
- Raising the corners of the mouth
- Smoker’s lines
- Slimming of calf muscles
- Twitching of eye muscles
- Medium to severe acne
- Migraines and tension headaches
Please see one of our doctors for a consultation to discuss your concerns.
Top five benefits of muscle-relaxing injections:
1. Minimally invasive and quick procedure
2. Relatively quick to see the results
3. Not permanent, so if you want your expressions back just stop having the injections.
4. If you have regular treatments in the same area the muscles will become smaller and therefore the results will gradually last longer
5. Can be used in combination with other treatments to improve and prolong the results
Your treatment plan
When you visit the Skin Aesthetics clinic for your consultation, one of our doctors will discuss your areas of concern and medical history with you to assess whether this treatment is suitable for you. They will then create a customised treatment plan, which may involve combination treatments with chemical peels and fillers. At your consultation you’ll be able to discuss the various treatment options and how they can help you, what to expect from the process and results and how to care for your skin before and after the treatments. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you have, and discuss any issues. You do not have to go ahead with any treatments if you think it’s not for you.

Frequently asked questions
Will botulinum toxin have any long-term side effects?
No. Botulinum toxin has been used medically for much longer than it has cosmetically, and there have been no reported cases of long-term side effects.
Can I prevent wrinkles if I start having these injections from a young age?
At Skin Aesthetics, we don’t believe in injecting preventative botox in young people. It may prevent wrinkles forming in the areas treated; however, it does not prevent premature ageing of the skin. Therefore, we would never give these injections purely for wrinkle prevention. Our doctors will always discuss the importance of a good skin care routine and daily sunscreen use in your consultations, as this is the best way to prevent wrinkles.
Will my forehead be completely frozen for three months?
Do I have to have anti-wrinkle injections every three months to maintain results?
If you want to maintain your results you should have two or three treatments every three months initially. This will make the muscles weaker so the results will last longer over time. We also recommend having a set of chemical peels or microneedling if you have any static lines. After that, you can just have the anti-wrinkle injections when you feel you need it.
Can I have anti-wrinkle injections if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, you should not have botulinum toxin if you know you are pregnant or you are breastfeeding. However, don’t worry if you had a treatment during early pregnancy when you didn’t know you were pregnant. There have been no reported cases of botulinum toxin causing any problems during pregnancy.
